Deadly avalanches claimed the lives of 20 people across Europe at the weekend, emergency officials said.

In the Savoyard Alps, two female skiers -- a 75-year-old French woman and a 45-year-old Swiss woman -- died in the department of Savoie.
A day earlier, two male teenagers died in an avalanche at the Saint-Francois Longchamp ski resort, also in the Savoie department. A third person was rescued. Also Saturday, two people died and two others were rescued after an avalanche in the neighboring department of Haute Savoie. Rescue teams tried to resuscitate another 21-year-old skier after sniffer dogs found his body buried in the snow, but failed.

Meanwhile, severe weather over the weekend left an estimated 680,000 homes without electricity in southeast France and southwestern Savoy. Workers are trying to fix the problem with no results so far.

Last week, 13 people died in other avalanches across Europe, being in Scotland (UK) and Turkey. That brings the final toll so far to 19 victims.
