Local News. Political Scandal Hits Casanares 20th July 2010 - Albarán Miguel Skifrani, Head of the Inquisitorial Directory. The acting Leader of the Opposition, Antonio Lasséc today made a series of allegations during an interview he gave on the morning T.V. program ¡Despierta Casanares!; Lasséc claimed that the Inquisitorial Directory has been infiltrated by several officials who work for the government of Seldonia; one of these officials is none other than the Grand Inquisitor himself whose name we now know to be Miguel Skifrani and we also know that he was appointed in 1991 by the administration of former president Carloso Cienaguillos. So serious was the claim that all the major news channels began to run it as the day's main news item. Lasséc claimed to have "evidence" that the Inquisitorial Directory is working against the "interests of Casanares" and was able to provide a series of classified documents which were obtained from the Seldonian Bureau for National Security containing a list of names of Casanarean intelligence officials who had been contracted to carry out Operation Titanium which according to the documents given to the press by Lasséc has the purpose of "Strengthening the Seldonian Armed forces as well as the Bureau for National Security through active, but clandestine cooperation with other states." The scandal which has snowballed through the corridors of power in Albarán has been dubbed by the media as the Skifrani Affair coincides with the news that three Casanarean industrialists and a Ukranian engineer, yet to be named have been kidnapped by "clandestine wing of the Bureau for National Security" according to president Marrotto. Whether there is a connection between the two events remains to be seen, however. The government wasted no time in refuting the claims calling Mr. Lasséc a "fantasist" and the president himself was forced to reveal the High Inquisitor's identity as well as other details, such as his age, his profession and place of birth. The president called a press conference at the Zarzuela Palace in Albarán and fervently denied the claims; he said that he had known Mr. Skifrani "for many years" and that he was an "honourable man who would do no such thing against the Republic". The president took no questions from the press and ruled out the possibility of holding a public inquiry to investigate Mr. Lasséc's claims, instead he said that he would personally study the situation and cautioned Lasséc against making "such dangerous claims" According to President Lucián Marrotto, Mr. Skifrani is a Laettan lawyer from Costa Bermeo whose parents immigrated from Bínefar 60 years ago during the years of the Laettan Secession. El Heraldo tried to contact the Seldonian Minister of the Interior in order to prove or disprove the allegations but instead our reporter was denied entry into the country when he arrived in Taskade around lunchtime and was subsequently deported back to Alba-Laettana. The news comes at a crucial time for the government and for President Marrotto whose approval ratings have fallen sharply and constantly in recent months; whatever effect this scandal will have on next month's parliamentary elections remains to be seen. |
